Women’s Health Interdisciplinary Seed Grant

Seed Grant Funding Criteria & Application

The Powell Center for Women’s Health is requesting applications for interdisciplinary seed grants from junior investigators proposing interdisciplinary women’s health and sex/gender difference research. The purpose of this program is to support faculty by providing mentorship, oversight, and pilot funds to develop an interdisciplinary research program in women’s health research.

Applications must address the health of women or sex/gender differences across the lifespan. Research areas can be any topic related to women’s health, but of particular interest to the Powell Center are the etiology, prevention, and treatment of:

  • Cancers that occur primarily in women, and sex-specific aspects of other cancers
  • Obesity/eating disorders and their associated medical conditions in girls and women
  • Substance abuse and associated risk behaviors
  • Cardiovascular disease including sex-specific basic mechanisms and disease presentation
  • Mental health disorders as a consequence of exposures more commonly occurring among women
  • Mature women’s health


  • United States citizen or permanent resident
  • Assistant Professor (in rank ≤ 6 years at the University of Minnesota or research intensive institution)
  • Current and past BIRCWH Scholars and previous Women’s Health Interdisciplinary Seed Grant recipients are not eligible


  • Applicants must have an interdisciplinary investigative team which includes individuals from at least two disciplines (professions) and a biostatistician or colleague with statistics and/ or methodological expertise. One of the individuals on the team should be a content expert from another field and the second should be a senior mentor.


  • $25,000 over one year in pilot funds in direct support of the research. No funds will be available to support faculty salaries.
  • In general, funds should be primarily used for supplies, support of research personnel (graduate students or technicians), subject payments, or to pay for services offered by the Clinical Translational Science Institute such as statistical analyses, research design, budget consultation, clinical trial monitoring, biomedical informatics support, or other related services.
  • No carry forward will be allowed without written permission. Written permission must be submitted within 30 days prior to the end of the grant period to Dr. Nancy Raymond, Director of the Powell Center of Women’s Health
  • No travel funds allowed
  • Up to two awards will be made


We are not accepting any applications at the this time.


An internal committee will review applications. Awardees will be selected on the following criteria:

  • Commitment to a career in women’s health research
  • Significance of topic to women’s health research
  • Innovation
  • Approach
  • Strength of the interdisciplinary research team and mentoring team
  • Likelihood of NIH grant submission within 2 years

The committee will make recommendations for funding to the Powell Center Director, Nancy Raymond, MD. Written reviews and critiques will be sent to all applicants.


Principal Investigators of funded projects will be required to provide a final report and an accounting of all funds expended at the completion of the project. They will meet with the Powell Center Director Nancy Raymond MD pre award and at six months post award. If the project extends beyond awarded dates, a progress report will be required along with a request for an extension. Reports are to be submitted to Dr. Nancy Raymond, MD, Director of the Powell Center for Women’s Health, no later than 60 days following the end of the grant period. Investigators will be expected to share their research results through lectures and poster presentations at women’s health seminars, and the annual women’s health research conference.
