The University of Minnesota Deborah E. Powell Center received the Building Interdisciplinary Research Careers in Women’s Health (BIRCWH) grant from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Office of Research on Women’s Health (ORWH) in Fall 2007. The grant was able to support five junior faculty members in developing their research in women's health.
The BIRCWH program is an internal K-12 grant mechanism (similar to the Career Advancement Program for Clinical Research Scholars) that fosters career development of junior faculty members. The BIRCWH scholars must engage in basic, clinical, translational, behavioral, or health services research in an area relevant to women's health, with an emphasis on sex and gender factors. The BIRCWH program accomplishes this goal by pairing senior faculty mentors with junior faculty to enable the scholars to establish independent research in areas that integrate scientific disciplines. Scholars are guaranteed set-aside time for research to advance their skills as independent investigators. Mentors are established investigators who have a commitment to fostering interdisciplinary approaches to research in women's health and sex and gender factors.
