Carolyn Garcia


Dr. Carolyn García is an Assistant Professor in the Integrative, Global, and Public Health Cooperative within the School of Nursing. Dr. García holds graduate degrees in nursing and public health obtained from the School of Nursing and the School of Public Health at the University of Minnesota in 1997 and 2000. García went on to receive her Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota in 2004, concurrently completing a pre-doctoral LEAH fellowship within the Division of Pediatrics at the University of Minnesota. She subsequently completed a 2 year post-doctoral fellowship in the Center for Adolescent Nursing and began a tenure-track appointment as a faculty member in the School of Nursing in 2006.

Dr. García’s research is focused on clinical trials in the field of Adolescent Health, specifically Latino adolescent stress and coping. As a BIRCWH scholar in 2008, Dr. García will be testing a school-based coping intervention for Latino adolescent females and exploring the use of reactive cortisol as an objective measure of intervention effect. As part of the collaborative team, Dr. Ghebre will be working with Renee Sieving, Ph.D., Associate Professor, Center for Adolescent Nursing, School of Nursing; Gerald August, Ph.D., Professor, Division of Psychiatry, School of Medicine; and Wendy Hellerstedt, Ph.D., MPH, Associate Professor, School of Public Health.

Dr. García balances work with family responsibilities that include raising two active children, ages 5 and 2. Favorite stress relievers include jogging and, not simultaneously, reading the latest issue of Tikkun.
