Translational Research Program
The Translational Research Program was established to encourage and provide support for new and novel clinical research. The goal of the program is to accelerate transfer of findings from the laboratory to clinical application. The program's purpose is to fund research that shows high promise for translating basic biomedical knowledge to prevention or new treatments and, ultimately, to prolong and enhance life. A principal intent of the program is to permit the acquisition of sufficient data to apply to an appropriate agency or sponsor for sustained support.

Population and Reproductive Health Grants
In its Population and Reproductive Health grantmaking, the foundation links population stabilization with peace and environment issues, and as such with broader social development and environmental goals. In choosing Population and Reproductive Health as a major area of grantmaking, the foundation recognizes that many complex factors pose a threat to human and ecological security. These factors are closely interrelated and include the status of women and the health and safety of families, as well as the dynamics of population growth, consumption, and technology. The foundation also recognizes that many factors threaten human reproductive health, including toxins in our environment. The focus on Population and Reproductive Health is part of the foundation's commitment to a world that allows for the full richness of human experience, both personal and global. The goals for this program are to achieve a healthy planet, ensure and improving access to family planning and reproductive health services within the United States, and make emergency contraception a widely accepted and available method of family planning in the U.S. and internationally.

2008 NIDA Avant-Garde Award Program for HIV/AIDS Research (DP1)
This award is designed to support individual scientists of exceptional creativity who propose cutting edge - and possibly transformative - approaches to major challenges in biomedical and behavioral research on drug abuse and HIV/AIDS. The term "avant-garde" is used to describe highly innovative approaches that have the potential to produce an unusually high impact. The proposed research should reflect ideas substantially different from those already being pursued by the investigator or others. Biomedical and behavioral research is defined broadly in this announcement as encompassing scientific investigations in the biological, behavioral, clinical, social, physical, chemical, computational, engineering, and mathematical sciences. The award is meant to support individuals who intend to pursue new research directions that are not readily supported by other NIH grant mechanisms. The program is not intended simply to expand the funding of an already supported research project, but rather to support highly creative researchers to pursue innovative concepts.and approaches to research on drug abuse and HIV/AIDS.

METHODS IN COMMUNITY-BASED PARTICIPATORY RESEARCH FOR HEALTH
Announcing the publication of “Methods in Community-Based Participatory Research for Health” Edited by Barbara A. Israel, Eugenia Eng, Amy J. Schulz, Edith A. Parker. Written by distinguished experts in the field, this book shows how researchers, practitioners, and community partners can work together to establish and maintain equitable partnerships using a community-based participatory research (CBPR) approach to increase knowledge and improve health and well-being of the communities involved. What distinguishes CBPR from other approaches to research is the active engagement of all partners in the process. This book provides a comprehensive and thorough presentation of CBPR study designs, specific data collection and analysis methods, and innovative partnership structures and process methods. This book informs students, practitioners, researchers, and community members about methods and applications needed to conduct CBPR in the widest range of research areas, including social determinants of health, health disparities, health promotion, community interventions, disease management, health services, and environmental health.
